Syria

Syria was the name of the geographical area covering modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine, a region with a very rich historical past and major archaeological sites. It is mentioned in all early pilgrim chronicles.

Maps of Syria are found in books from all periods of travelling. Several of them also show travellers' itineraries. Views of biblical places, pilgim sites, ancient temples and findings, coins, early Christian churches, Crusader castles as well as cities, inns, landscapes, flora and fauna are some of the subjects represented in travel accounts. The diverse religious minorities, human types and their costume did not pass unnoticed by travellers either.
