Maps of the Ionian islands are included in all the isolaria from the 15th century onwards, as the islandswere on the maritime route from Venice to the eastern Mediterranean. Many travellers from western Europe were able to easily tour the Ionian islands, most of which were under Venetian rule till 1797, then occupied by the French (1797-9), and finally ruled by the British (1814-1864). Those travellers produced singular works on these islands, such as archaeological and geographical treatises and socioeconomic studies.
In the 19th century the Ionian islands often form part of the tour of the eastern Mediterranean. They were visited by significant artists, whose paintings convey an enchanting natural landscape.
