BUSCH, Moritz
A number of artistic magazines were in circulation during the 19th century. They published engravings with their accompanying texts, written by renowned scholars, and often were released in several European languages simultaneously.
This artistic edition was illustrated with plates by German artists August Löffler and explanatory texts by Moritz Busch. The outcome of their work is a pleasant descriptive and narrative text written a personal style. The plates follow contemporary aesthetic conventions, and many of them show uncommon subjects.
Moritz Busch travelled to the East several times, for at least three years. His texts, both amusing and educational, show his thorough knowledge of the regions he describes. The German painter, engraver and draughtsman August Löffler travelled to Italy in 1846. He was in Egypt and the Holy Land in 1849, in Greece in 1853 and in Milan and Venice in 1856. His works, mainly landscapes and views of monuments and antiquities, were often published in contemporary artistic magazines.
