ZALLONY, Marcaky. Voyage à Tine, l'une des iles de l'Archipel de la Grèce, suivi d'un traité de l'asthme.., Paris, Arthus-Bertrand, 1809.
Markos Filippos Zalonis (1782-?) was a Greek surgeon and writer from Tinos. He settled in Smyrna at a young age and studied in Paris. For a time Zallony was physician to the Grand Vizier. He stayed on in Istanbul and practiced medicine in that city.
He married a woman from a Phanariot family. However, as he was catholic, his wife's parents achieved the dissolution of the marriage by the Patriarch's intervention. Zallonis settled in Marseilles with his son, dedicated himself to writing, became a member of the Philhellenic Comitate of Marseilles and was awarded the Légion d'Honneur.
Aside from this work on Tinos, which is dedicated to Alexandros Soutsos and earned Zallonis the title of doctor by the University of Paris, he also wrote a study on the Phanariots and a medical treatise on asthma. The “Voyage to Tinos” is one of the earliest monographs on the island and includes a very rare map.
