The group of the Cyclades in the Aegean sea were mapped already in isolaria of the 15th century, in manuscript or in print, and later on in port indexes.
The famous ancient remains of Delos, a holy island in antiquity, around which the rest of the Cyclades form a circle (hence their name), as well as monuments in nearby islands (Paros, Naxos) attracted visitors who sought for remains and traces of antiquity with the aid of ancient Greek and Latin sources, from the 17th century onwards.
Already in the 16th but above all from the early 18th century onwards, female costume is a popular subject in illustrations of travel works. In addition, views of ports, sights, details from ancient buildings and statues, churches and monasteries, scenes from everyday life, rare flora and fauna are some of the subjects which inspired paintings, engravings and photographs and enrich the treasury of graphic material available on the Cyclades.
