Epirus appears on maps from the 15th century onwards, generally as the adjacent coast of the Ionian islands. The famous ancient cities of the region, its proximity to the Ionian islands and its inhabitants are the main subjects of the illustrations related to the area.
However, travellers began to visit Epirus only in the 19th century, when it was under Ali Pasha's rule. Later in that century, the impressive coasts and other sights of Epirus illustrated accounts of the Grand Tour of the Eastern Mediterranean.
