Central Greece

Not all regions of Central Greece were equally visited by travellers from Western Europe. Athens attracted the greatest interest, especially from the 17th century onwards, and its monuments were drawn and represented in various ways in nearly all travel accounts. Central Greece includes other archaeological locations such as Sounion, Marathon, Delphi, Thermopylae, and cities which played an important role in later periods and inspired illustrations of travellers' works, such as Chalcis, Naupactus and Mesolonghi. Euboea, due to its proximity to Athens also received s considerable number of visitors in the 19th century. However, the western part of Central Greece (Eurytania, Aetolia and Acarnania) did not attract so many travellers, as it was away from the main land routes and did not possess equally impressive ancient remains.

Among the most popular subjects, from the late 18th century onwards, are traditional costumes from Megaris, Boeotia, Delphi, Euboea and naturally Athens. Central Greece appears in maps together with its adjacent regions, or in maps of the Greek state in general.
