Thrace
Thrace is normally considered as the area defined by the Aegean sea, the Hellespont, the Marmara sea, the Bosphorus, the Black Sea, and the inland down to the valley north of Mount Rodope. However, the geographic definition of Thrace has varied throughout history.
In the modern age, the geographical area of Thrace, which includes western, modern-day Greek Thrace as well as part of Turkey and Bulgaria, has been an extremely important region due to its position, as two of the major cities of the Ottoman empire were situated in the area, and the third most important city, Thessaloniki, is also very close to Thrace.
In addition, Thrace possessed a dense network which connected the provinces of the Ottoman Empire to Istanbul and allowed the transportation of armies, people and merchandise. Consequently, the vast majority of travellers crossed Thrace during their journeys to and from Istanbul.
The illustrations related to Thrace found in travel works – drawings, sketches, views of cities, monuments and antiquities - generally cover the areas of eastern and northern Thrace, while an extremely limited number shows subjects from western Thrace.
As Thrace includes the western part of the Dardanelles, as well as Istanbul and the European coast of the Bosphorus, there is in fact a vast corpus of illustrations related to this region.
