BARTH, Hermann
The first edition of this volume circulated around 1886, that is, well before the events of 1913. It is one of the 56 publications in the series "Les Villes d’Art Célèbres", which included guides to Athens, Rome, Pompeii, Venice, Cairo and other cities. Dedicated to the author’s sister and enlivened by 130 illustrations, the work presents in an engaging literary style an overview of the history and monuments of Constantinople. It highlights some of the masterpieces in the Archaeological Museum, such as the Sarcophagus of the Crying Women and the Alexander Sarcophagus, describes everyday life in Constantinople in the early twentieth century and notes the most important sights on the Bosporus and in Bursa.
