BROWN, Edward

Edward Browne (1644-1708) was a British physician. He studied at Cambridge and his native Norwich, where he also led an intense social life. Besides medicine, his subjects included botany, literature and theology. He lived in London and travelled around Europe to visit museums, churches and libraries (Italy, France, the Netherlands and Germany).

From Vienna, the city where he probably learned Greek, Browne travelled to the mines of Hungary, crossed Southeastern Europe and reached Larissa in Thessaly, where he met the Sultan.

Brown returned to Britain, joined the Academy of Medicine, and published the narrative of his travels as well as two more works, a historical treatise and a the biographies of Themistocles and Sertorius. He was physician to Charles II of England and left numerous hand-written notes on medicine. The chronicle of his tour of Thessaly is a unique and valuable resource on the region during the second half of the 17th century.
